The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was an American turbojet fighter-bomberaircraft. Originating as a 1944 United StatesArmyAirForces (USAAF) proposal for a "day fighter", the F-84 firstflew in 1946. Althoughitentered service in 1947, the Thunderjet was plagued by somanystructural and engineproblemsthat a 1948 U.S. Air Force reviewdeclareditunable to executeanyaspect of itsintendedmission and consideredcanceling the program. The aircraft was not consideredfullyoperationaluntil the 1949 F-84D model and the design maturedonly with the definitive F-84G introduced in 1951. In 1954, the straight-wingThunderjet was joined by the swept-wing F-84F Thunderstreak fighter and RF-84F Thunderflashphotoreconnaissanceaircraft.
Single-seat fighter-bombercapable of delivering the Mark 7 nuclear bomb using the LABS, J35-A-29 engine, autopilot, capable of inflightrefuelingusingboth the boom (receptacle in leftwingleadingedge) and drogue (probefitted to wingtipfueltanks), introduced the multi-framedcanopywhich was laterretrofitted to earlierstraight-winged F-84s. A total of 3,025 werebuilt (1,936 for NATO under MDAP). The largerenginehad a higherairflowatitstake-off thrustthan the intakehadbeendesigned for. Thiscausedhigherflowvelocities, increasedpressurelosses and thrustloss. Commencing with block 20, auxiliary "suck-in" doorswereaddedahead of the wingleadingedge to regainsome of the thrustloss. At high enginerpm and lowaircraftspeeds, such as take-off, the spring-loadeddoorsweresucked open by the partialvacuumcreated in the duct. When the aircraftreachedsufficientairspeed the ram pressurerise in the ductclosed the auxiliarydoors.[10] F-84G 51-1343 was modified with a periscope system to test the periscopeinstallationproposed for the Republic XF-103.
