The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a German World War II fighter aircraftthat was, along with the Focke-WulfFw 190, the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. The Bf 109 firstsawoperational service in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the dawn of the jetageat the end of World War II in 1945. It was one of the most advancedfighterswhenitfirstappeared, with anall-metal monocoqueconstruction, a closedcanopy, and retractablelandinggear. It was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aeroengine. From the end of 1941, the Bf 109 was steadilysupplanted by the Focke-WulfFw 190. It was called the Me 109 by Allied aircrew and some German aces, eventhoughthis was not the official German designation. In September 1942, the G-4 appeared; this version was identical to the G-2 in allaspects, including performance, except for beingfitted with the FuG 16 VHF radio set, whichprovided much clearer radio transmissions and hadthree-times the range of the earlier HF sets. Externallythiscould be recognised by the position of the fuselageantennalead-in which was movedfurther aft to betweenframesseven and eight on the fuselagespine. Due to the steadyweightincreases of the 109, from the spring of 1943 larger 660 × 160 mm (26 × 6.3 in) mainwheelswereintroduced, replacing the previouslyused 650 × 150 mm (25.6 × 6 in) type. The undercarriagelegswerealteredsothat the wheel'sverticalaxis was nearlyuprightratherthanbeingparallel with the oleo leg. Thesechangesresulted in the fitting of teardrop-shapedfairings to the upperwingsurfaceabove the wheel-wells to accommodate the upper part of the mainwheels. The largerwheels and fairingswereoftenretrofitted to G-2s. In addition, a larger 350 × 135 mm (14 × 5 in) tailwheelreplaced the original 290 × 110 mm (11 × 4 in) one; the largertailwheel no longerfitted the recess, so the retractionmechanism was disconnected and the tailwheelfixed down. Up to July 1943, 1,242 G-4s wereproduced, with anadditionalfour in Győr and WNF factories in the second half of 1943.Between January and February 1943, 50 examples of a pressurized version, the G-3 werealsoproduced; similar to the G-1 althoughit was equipped with the same FuG 16 VHF radio set as the G-4.
