The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang isan American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomberusedduring World War II and the Korean War, amongotherconflicts. The Mustang was designed in April 1940 by a design team headed by James Kindelberger of North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a requirement of the British PurchasingCommission. The PurchasingCommissionapproachedNorth American Aviation to buildCurtiss P-40 fightersunderlicense for the RoyalAir Force (RAF). Ratherthanbuildanold design from anothercompany, North American Aviationproposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. The prototype NA-73X airframe was rolled out on 9 September 1940, 102 daysafter the contract was signed, and firstflew on 26 October.
Overtwentyvariants of the North American P-51 Mustang fighter wereproduced from 1940, whenitfirstflew, to after the Second World War, some of whichwereemployedalso in the Korean War and in severalotherconflicts. Numerousexamples of the aircraftsurvive to thisday, often as warbirds orheavilymodified airracers.
