The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 (Russian: Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-21; NATO reportingname: Fishbed) is a supersonicjet fighter and interceptoraircraft, designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the SovietUnion.Origins
The MiG-21 jet fighter was a continuation of Sovietjetfighters, starting with the subsonic MiG-15 and MiG-17, and the supersonic MiG-19. A number of experimental Mach 2 Sovietdesignswerebased on noseintakes with eitherswept-backwings, such as the Sukhoi Su-7, ortaileddeltas, of which the MiG-21 would be the most successful.
Development of whatwouldbecome the MiG-21 began in the early 1950s, whenMikoyan OKB finished a preliminary design study for a prototypedesignated Ye-1 in 1954. Thisproject was veryquicklyreworkedwhenit was determinedthat the plannedengine was underpowered; the redesignled to the secondprototype, the Ye-2. Both these and otherearlyprototypesfeaturedsweptwings. The firstprototype with delta wings as found on productionvariants was the Ye-4. It madeitsmaidenflight on 16 June 1955 and itsfirst public appearanceduring the SovietAviation Day display atMoscow'sTushinoairfield in July 1956.
In the West, due to the lack of availableinformation, earlydetails of the MiG-21 oftenwereconfused with those of similarSovietfighters of the era. In one instance, Jane'sAll the World's Aircraft 1960–1961 listed the "Fishbed" as a Sukhoi design and usedanillustration of the Su-9 'Fishpot'.
