The Focke-WulfFw 190 Würger (English: Shrike) is a German single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraftdesigned by Kurt Tank atFocke-Wulf in the late 1930s and widelyusedduring World War II. Along with itswell-knowncounterpart, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Fw 190 became the backbone of the Jagdwaffe (Fighter Force) of the Luftwaffe. The twin-row BMW 801 radialenginethatpowered most operationalversionsenabled the Fw 190 to lift largerloadsthan the Bf 109, allowingitsuse as a day fighter, fighter-bomber, ground-attackaircraft and to a lesserdegree, night fighter.
The Fw 190A startedflyingoperationallyover France in August 1941 and quicklyproved superior in all but turn radius to the SpitfireMk. V, the main front-line fighter of the RoyalAir Force (RAF) particularlyatlow and medium altitude.[3] The 190 maintainedsuperiorityover Allied fightersuntil the introduction of the improvedSpitfireMk. IX.InNovember/December 1942, the Fw 190 madeitsaircombatdebut on the Eastern Front, finding much success in fighter wings and specialisedgroundattackunits (Schlachtgeschwader (Battle Wingsor Strike Wings) from October 1943.
Based on the A-8 Fighter, having a slightlymodifiedinjector on the compressorwhichallowed for increased performance atloweraltitudes for severalminutes. Armament of the Fw 190 F-8 was two 20 mm MG 151/20 cannon in the wingroots and two 13 mm (0.51 in) MG 131 machinegunsabove the engine. It was outfited with an ETC 501 Bomb rack as centerlinemount and four ETC 50 bomb racks as underwingmounts.
