The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a German World War II fighter aircraftthat was, along with the Focke-WulfFw 190, the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. The Bf 109 firstsawoperational service in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the dawn of the jetageat the end of World War II in 1945. It was one of the most advancedfighterswhenitfirstappeared, with anall-metal monocoqueconstruction, a closedcanopy, and retractablelandinggear. It was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aeroengine.From the end of 1941, the Bf 109 was steadilysupplanted by the Focke-WulfFw 190. It was called the Me 109 by Allied aircrew and some German aces, eventhoughthis was not the official German designation.Someversions of the G-6 and laterGshad a taller, wood-structuretail unit and redesignedrudder with aninsetrudderbalanceprotrudingforwardinto the fin whichimprovedstabilityat high speeds. The introduction of the WGr. 21 cm (8 in) under-wingmortar/rockets and the 30 mm (1.18 in) MK 108 cannonincreasedfirepower. Certainproductionbatches of the Bf 109G werefitted with aileronFlettnertabs to decreasestickforcesat high speeds. A radio-navigationalmethod, the Y-Verfahren (Y-Guidance) was introduced with the FuG 16ZY.
