AH-1G Marines 1:72

-

The Bell AH-1 Cobrais a two-blade rotor, single-engineattackhelicoptermanufactured by Bell Helicopter. It was developedusing the engine, transmission and rotor system of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois. A member of the prolificHuey family, the AH-1 isalsoreferred to as the HueyCobraor Snake.
The AH-1 was the backbone of the United StatesArmy'sattackhelicopterfleet, but hasbeenreplaced by the AH-64 Apache in Army service. Upgradedversionscontinue to fly with the militaries of severalothernations. The AH-1 twin-engineversionsremain in service with United States Marine Corps (USMC) as the service'sprimaryattackhelicopter. Surplus AH-1 helicoptershavebeenconverted for fightingforestfires.
Closelyrelated to the development of the Bell AH-1 is the story of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois—anicon of the Vietnam War and one of the most numeroushelicoptertypesbuilt. The UH-1 made the theory of aircavalrypractical, as the newtacticscalled for US forces to be highly mobile across a widearea. Unlikebefore, theywould not stand and fightlongbattles, and theywould not stay and holdpositions. Instead, the plan was that the troopscarried by fleets of UH-1 "Hueys" wouldrangeacross the country, to fight the enemy attimes and places of theirown choice.
It soonbecameclearthat the unarmedtroophelicopterswerevulnerableagainstgroundfire from VietCong and NorthVietnamesetroops, particularly as theycame down to drop theirtroops in a landingzone. Withoutfriendlysupport from artilleryorgroundforces, the onlyway to pacify a landingzone was from the air, preferably with anaircraftthatcouldclosely escort the transport helicopters, and loiterover the landingzone as the battleprogressed. By 1962 a small number of armed UH-1As wereused as escorts, armed with multiplemachineguns and rocketmounts.
