The PZL TS-11 Iskra(English: Spark) is a Polishjettrainer, developed and manufactured by aircraftcompany PZL-Mielec. It hasbeenused by the airforces of Poland and India. It is notable as being the firstdomestically-developedjetaircraft to be produced by Poland, its service for over 50 years as the principal trainingaircraft of the PolishAir Force, and as the oldestjet-propelledaircraftstill in service in Poland.
As a part of efforts to preservePoland'sability to independentlydevelopaircraft in an era of political and economicsubservience to the neighbouringSoviet Union, during the 1950s, Polishengineersat the Poland'sAviationInstitute (IL) commencedearlywork upon the design of whatwouldbecome the firstjetaircraft to be developed in Poland. Following the death of Joseph Stalin, work on the initiativecould be performedmoreopenly and governmentofficialsbecamesupportive of such a venture. The fledgling design was heavilyinfluenced by the requirementsspecified by the PolishAir Force, whohadformalised a requirement for a jet-propelledaircraft for trainingpurposes. On 5 February 1960, the firstprototypeconducteditsmaidenflight, powered by animported British Armstrong SiddeleyViperturbojetengine.
During 1963, deliveries of the firstproduction model of the type, designated as the TS-11 Iskra bis A, commenced to the PolishAir Force. During the 1960s, the Iskra competed to be selected as the standard jettrainerthroughout the WarsawPact. However, it was not selected to fulfilthissignificant role, the rivalCzechoslovakian Aero L-29 Delfínhavingbeenchoseninstead, which went on to be built in greaternumbers for a widenumber of export customers. Production of the TS-11 came to an end during 1987, however the typeremained in service with the PolishAir Force and the Indian Air Force into the 21st century. From 1969 onwards, a handful of TS-11s havebeenused by the PolishAirForce's Biało-Czerwone Iskry aerobatics display team. It hasalsobeenused for aerialreconnaissancepurposes. During the aircraft'slateryears of service, severalexampleshavebeen sold ontoprivateowners.
