The Focke-WulfFw 190 Würger (English: Shrike) is a German single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraftdesigned by Kurt Tank atFocke-Wulf in the late 1930s and widelyusedduring World War II. Along with itswell-knowncounterpart, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Fw 190 became the backbone of the Jagdwaffe (Fighter Force) of the Luftwaffe. The twin-row BMW 801 radialenginethatpowered most operationalversionsenabled the Fw 190 to lift largerloadsthan the Bf 109, allowingitsuse as a day fighter, fighter-bomber, ground-attackaircraft and to a lesserdegree, night fighter.
The Fw 190A startedflyingoperationallyover France in August 1941 and quicklyproved superior in all but turn radius to the SpitfireMk. V, the main front-line fighter of the RoyalAir Force (RAF) particularlyatlow and medium altitude.[3] The 190 maintainedsuperiorityover Allied fightersuntil the introduction of the improvedSpitfireMk. IX.InNovember/December 1942, the Fw 190 madeitsaircombatdebut on the Eastern Front, finding much success in fighter wings and specialisedgroundattackunits (Schlachtgeschwader (Battle Wingsor Strike Wings) from October 1943.
The Fw 190A series' performance decreasedat high altitudes (usually 6,000 m (20,000 ft) and above), whichreduceditseffectiveness as a high-altitudeinterceptor. From the Fw 190's inception, therehadbeenongoingefforts to addressthis with a turbosupercharged BMW 801 in the B model, the much longer-nosed C model with efforts to alsoturbochargeitschosen Daimler-Benz DB 603 inverted V12 powerplant, and the similarlylong-nosed D model with the Junkers Jumo 213. Problems with the turbochargerinstallations on the -B and -C subtypesmeantonly the D model entered service in September 1944. These high-altitudedevelopmentseventuallyled to the Focke-Wulf Ta 152, which was capable of extremespeedsat medium to high altitudes (755 km/h (408 kn; 469 mph) at 13,500 m (44,300 ft)).Whilethese "longnose" 190 variants and the Ta 152 derivativeespeciallygave the Germansparity with Allied opponents, theyarrivedtoolate to affect the outcome of the war.
The Fw 190F configuration was originallytested in a Fw 190 A-0/U4, starting in May 1942, fitted with centre-line and wing-mounted bomb racks.
